THE ONE WHERE WE TRIED HELLO FRESH

Our little family of four are often ships that pass in the night during the week. We usually don’t eat together. My husbands hours mean he’s often home later than the children would like to eat, meaning we usually end up cooking twice a night! There’s no particular reason for this, we could cook one big meal and re-heat later for us but for some reason it’s just how it’s worked out. Recently we got stuck in a food-rut, we always meal plan at the beginning of the week, but it’s always the same meals.. Spaghetti Bolognese, Fajitas, Chicken Pie, Chilli and so on. They kind of rotate every few weeks and WE ARE BORED!

I’ve seen Hello Fresh advertised for a while and have been tempted to try it a few times but have never quite got round to it. When Hello Fresh contacted us to see if we would like to give it a go, I jumped at the chance. The timing couldn’t have been better. The children had just gone back to school, our youngest for the first time, and we were all trying to find our new routine again after a lovely chilled Summer. Who doesn’t want their food planned for the week and delivered to their door hey!

We ordered our box to arrive on a Sunday & we got a text to give us a delivery time. We were out typically, but were able to request to leave with a neighbour we trust and so they did. The large box includes lots of colour coded paper bags which we discovered match the large meal cards. In each bag are all the ingredients, including the herbs for that particular meal. The meat comes in a separate sealed and insulated bag which has cool ice bags in and is perfectly cold and safe when it arrived. It looked more than our usual weekly shop when laid out!

Our meal choices were:

  • Mild Sausage Chilli with Homemade Tortilla Chips
  • Chicken Casserole with Sweetcorn, Green Beans and a Sticky Chilli Drizzle
  • Gnocchi Bolognese with Cheesy Broccoli
  • Pan-Fried Chicken with Dukkah Roasted Sweet Potato & Citrus Sour Cream

With each meal comes a large card with ingredients list and on the reverse a simple step-by-step instruction on how to create your meal. Really simple and easy. All that was left was to work out which days we wanted to have which meal and how to manage cooking it so that we could try and eat all together or re-heat for later for my husband and I.

The first day we cooked and ate the pan fried chicken separately and it was absolutely delicious! The second day I was determined to make more of the cooking and got the children involved in the prep! My eight year old daughter found the recipe card really easy to follow and was so chuffed to be joining in! See pics below!

I have to say, I did have hopes it would bring us together i.e. eating together, but i’d not even thought about the cooking together bit and it was honestly so lovely to work together and get the children involved in helping to cook the meal, I’m not joking, they both DEFINITELY ate more than usual and I’m sure it’s because they had got involved more. Something i’m really going to try and take away from this and implement in the future.

Aside from the great menu choices we also learned new techniques of cooking, I’m a rubbish cook, I don’t mind telling you! I had NO idea you could make crispy tortillas from soft wheat tortillas and I would definitely use chicken thighs again instead of breasts in a casserole.

Here’s my round up of what I loved about Hello Fresh:

  • New, easy and QUICK recipe ideas & new cooking techniques
  • Fresh ingredients with wide variety
  • Little pots of pre-measured out herbs – saves searching in the cupboard
  • Perfect if you were just returning from holiday & could order ahead so the box arrived ready for your return, or for self-catering holidays, you could order it to arrive at your destination!
  • Generous portion sizes – on two occasions my husband took left-overs to work the next day. You could also freeze some too for the future.

What would make it even better?

The meat fat content was quite high, especially the mince, we would normally buy lean mince from the butchers so I would’ve preferred leaner option.

Bookable delivery slots – though ours was absolutely fine while we were out and still cold and fresh on a relatively mild day.

I would definitely order Hello Fresh for our family in the future. For us I think I would find it most useful if I knew I had a busy week ahead or if I knew there wouldn’t be time to fit in ‘the big shop’ for whatever reason. I also think i’d use it during another food-rut, there are at least three new ideas I’ve had from just this one box, it would be great to build up a collection of recipe cards too if ever we are stuck for inspiration.
